I got a message saying to try again, and still no go. Did anyone else have a similar problem? Couldn't agree more about DNG. But Adobe's policy to terminate support for older versions of Photoshop by just not issuing ACR updates for previous versions any longer does also upset me a little. To me this just looks like a marketing move rather than a real necessity. I'm happy with my current version of PS and would see no need to upgrade anytime soon.
However, my next camera will probably be the Fuji X-Pro 1. So I'm screwed, along with the acquisition costs for the new equipment comes the hefty upgrade price of PS if I want to carry on with my usual workflow and stay on the legal side as well. Clever move, Adobe - but for sure one that annoys the hell out of not to few customers. I'll be in the same boat soon with Lightroom. There are always alternatives. If people don't change, Adobe won't either. Microsoft managed to drive many away from Office with the release of MS Office Photoshop CS6 is not likely to be a Windows Vista level disaster, but Adobe can't behave like they're the only game in town, no matter how good ACR is at raw extraction.
Glad I spent 20 bucks on the intro upgrade from Bibble 5 to Aftershot.
I agree it's a shoddy policy but can't you just convert to DNR as the first step of your workflow to overcome this? Vista wasn't a disaster except in terms of marketing failure. I had a Windows ME machine and it was terrible. Sorry from what I read and my associates experienced Vista was close to ME.
Vista was terrible; fat, slow and not very user friendly. It's the reason my wife and I now use Macs. This point is particularly important for those who own the Fuji X Pro1 and want to use that Fuji's raws to their best capacities. Also obviously there will be new raw capable cameras introduced in the fall of Remember CS6 is unproven software and Adobe could have screwed up as badly as Microsoft did with Windows ME and Windows Vista etc--not saying Adobe has messed up, but being forced to pay bucks to find out is insulting.
I've been doing all my image editing via PS CS6 public beta. No significant problems. If you think software can be created, supported, updated, tested for free, do it yourself. I have never seen so many people in a hobby who can't wait for lenses to get updates and bodies to get better, then bitch like ignorant fools that they can't use their 7 year old OS that they got for free with their system, and bitch that they can't get free updates forever.
You aren't smart enough to understand computers, and you can't afford the photography tools you want. So, it must be everyone elses' fault. There is a free RAW converter that comes with your camera. Use it.

I'll probably buy the "upgrade", but will wait until more people post positive comments about PS CS6. Photoshop CS5 has been out for 7 years? Sorry I've only had it for 6 months, in my world that qualifies me for a free upgrade. DNGs are still somewhat camera specific. It serves nobody if they go all to DNG and all of them put flags inside that make any of them individual and non compatible, as it is actually. We will never see one single raw format anyway, there is no hope in that direction. You better stick to the camera's native raw format, at least all common photo-soft have the conversion code and open them, except for the more recent to the soft cameras that await updates.
They had a free version called Raw Shooter Essentials. I did not like the colors but the software had an amazing pattern noise suppression tool. Unless my memory fails me Adobe bought the whole enterprise and ever since then I have been waiting for that magical pattern noise suppression slider to emerge in ACR. There's a new Moire suppressor in LR4 local adjustment controls. Do you know if this is related to the RawShooter tech? NIK denoiser is the worst. I believe so. Certainly all the various interactions are now supported properly between LR4 and CS5, in that the adjustments made in Lightroom are displayed properly in Photoshop.
Without this update, the "Edit in PS" Lightroom command did at least offer an option to have LR render the adjustments into a bitmap, instead of having PS do it - which sidestepped the incompatibility of "process versions".

However this did not work for the other methods available, including the useful option to open multiple LR images as layers of a PS document. Now with ACR6.
Importantly, though, this update if the release candidate is any guide probably does not add any ability for the ACR dialog to manipulate the new processing version. No, ACR 6. On the adobe site it clearly says so. If they are taking this much time to fine tune the X-Pro 1 Raw converter, it must become incredibly good. It is a pity that Adobe still thinks in CS release versions. Their intention is obvious, forcing people to buy a new major version after 2 years if a new camera has to be supported.
You haven't been following Adobe very closely. They're pushing "Creative Cloud" very hard and they're trying to motivate people out of retail apps. One thing Adobe has promised for Creative Cloud subscribers is continuous features and enhancements that break the version model that most software providers have used for decades. I'm dubious since frequent subscription app changes will put Adobe customers out of sync with each other, and I think Adobe will essentially be beta testing on the cloud subscribers.
But Adobe wants you to abandon CS versions and become a subscriber. If not, will LR4 work seamlessly with CS5 and the new update? It wont work 'swimmingly' because ACR6. You can view and do some minor changes, but you don't get the full set of controls. So you are forced to downgrade the LR4 edited files to "process ". It's very annoying for any serious workflow. I agree one should pay for a revised major version of the ACR plugin, perhaps the same as an LR upgrade? Personaly, as a professional, I don't like using the LR4 workflow. Adobe know what their doing Adobe is not the most generous of software companies and yes their software is expensive no matter how you cut it.
Adobe does not support their customers for 90 days or even 30 when it comes to new releases and upgrades. Will CS6 Extended be worth the cost for me to upgrade? Time will tell as we all face Adobe and genuflect and gravel! It's all about the money! And yes I will eventually pony up for CS6 Extended upgrade sometime in the future. As to up grades to ACR, well you would think that Adobe could offer some compromise to their loyal customer base. If there isn't any money in it for them don't hold your breath.
